Lanzarote facts and figures

In the year of 2016, a total of 200.850 people lived on Lanzarote.

The island government (Cabildo Insular) is based in the capital, Arrecife, which has a population of 57.357. The majority of the inhabitants of Lanzarote (73.9%) are Spanish, with a sizeable number of residents from other European nations, mainly British (4.0%), Germans (2.6%) and Irish (2.5%).



The island has its own international airport and Guacimeta Airport is situated approx 5 km from the capital Arrecife, on which 4.938.632 passengers travelled in 2010. Tourism has the main influence on the island's economy for the past forty years, the only other industry since is agriculture and construction.

Another smaller tourist sector has been promoted and the amount of international Cruise liners docking at Arrecife harbor has improved in the past years and has produced in 2010 the amount of 287.730 tourists in 187 Cruise liners (+19,6 %), who have come to visit the island.

The main tourist resorts are Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen & Playa Blanca. The majority of tourists arrive from England, Spain, Germany & Ireland. Also visitors from Denmark, France, Holland, Norway, Belgium and Finland benefit from regular flights to Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is part of the province of Las Palmas, and is divided into seven municipalities:

  • Arrecife
  • Haría
  • San Bartolomé
  • Teguise (includes Isla de La Graciosa and four smaller islets)
  • Tías
  • Tinajo
  • Yaiza
